Ananda Marga, Washington State Chapter
We envision a vibrant, spiritually awakened community rooted in universal love, service, and rationality. As a non-profit organization, Ananda Marga promotes the practice of yoga and meditation for spiritual growth and social transformation. Guided by a holistic philosophy that includes its own progressive socio-economic theory (PROUT), we work to eliminate all forms of exploitation and discrimination. 1. Our Spiritual Practices:
Kiirtan: Baba Nam Kevalam
Kiirtan is an integral part of our spiritual practice in Ananda Marga because it prepares the mind and heart for deep meditation. By repeating the mantra "Baba Nam Kevalam"—which means "Only the name of the Beloved" or "Everything is an expression of divine love"—we channel our thoughts away from worldly distractions and toward a state of inner peace and devotion.
The benefits of kiirtan are many:
-
It purifies the mind, removing negative thoughts and emotions.
-
It awakens joy and love, uplifting our emotional state.
-
It sharpens concentration, making it easier to meditate deeply.
-
It reduces ego, helping us feel connected to something greater.
-
And it creates a powerful spiritual vibration, making the environment more conducive to meditation.
-
In essence, kiirtan is not just a chant—it is a powerful gateway to inner stillness, spiritual awakening, and bliss.
2. Our Spiritual Practices:
Meditation (sadhana)
Ananda Marga meditation for beginners starts with the simple and powerful mantra "Baba Nam Kevalam," which means "Only the name of the Beloved" or "Everything is an expression of divine love."

You sit quietly, close your eyes, and gently repeat the mantra in your mind—"Baba Nam Kevalam… Baba Nam Kevalam…". Let your thoughts focus on the sound and meaning of the words. If your mind wanders, gently bring it back to the mantra. This helps calm the mind, open the heart, and connect you with a deeper sense of peace and love within.
It’s a universal, heart-centered meditation—simple, devotional, and open to everyone.
